GeoTIFF and Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF

GeoTIFF is a TIFF image with spatial metadata describing its location, pixel size and coordinate system. It is a standard container for aerial imagery, elevation models, classified rasters and analysis results.

Best used for
Georeferenced imagery and numeric raster grids that must retain their location, resolution, data type and CRS.
GeoVerto support
GeoVerto reads and writes GeoTIFF and Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF in raster workflows. It also supports common raster targets, while some complex scientific containers are read-only.

GeoTIFF versus COG

A Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF is still a valid GeoTIFF. Internal tiling, overviews and file ordering let compatible clients request a small area over HTTP without downloading the whole raster. Not every GeoTIFF is organised as a COG.

Raster values are not always colours

An elevation model may store floating-point heights such as 812.4 in every pixel. Converting it to an ordinary JPEG or PNG preview can rescale, round or discard those numeric values. Keep a numeric raster format for analysis.

Compression and CRS

  • DEFLATE and LZW compression are lossless and suitable for measurement or classified data.
  • JPEG compression inside a TIFF is lossy: useful for imagery, unsuitable when exact pixel values matter.
  • A proper GeoTIFF stores its CRS internally. A plain TIFF without georeferencing is reported without a confident spatial reference rather than silently located.
  • GeoVerto writes GeoTIFF, COG, PNG, JPEG, JPEG 2000, ASCII Grid, netCDF, Erdas Imagine and ENVI; HDF5 and GRIB are read-only in the current workflow.

Supported conversions

No dedicated English GeoTIFF conversion pair is currently present in the public converter catalogue. GeoVerto supports GeoTIFF in its raster workflows, but this guide does not link or promise a route until that exact pair is in the published allowlist.

Work with GeoTIFF

Review the published English converter catalogue. GeoTIFF will receive a direct link here only when an exact raster pair is available.
