Compressed KML (KMZ)
KMZ is a ZIP archive containing a KML document—usually named doc.kml—and optional resources such as icons, photos or image overlays. Google Earth commonly creates it when a project must travel as one file.
- Best used for
- Packaging Google Earth geometry and its local visual resources into one smaller, shareable file.
- GeoVerto support
- GeoVerto accepts a KMZ directly, checks the archive before extraction and reads the KML inside. Published English workflows use KMZ as both a source and a target; every current route is listed below.
A self-contained archive
Upload the .kmz file itself; it does not need separate sidecars. Like KML, its coordinates are WGS 84 longitude/latitude (EPSG:4326).
Archive checks
Because KMZ is ZIP-based, GeoVerto checks extraction paths, suspicious compression ratios, symbolic links and nested archives before the conversion engine sees its contents.
What does not transfer
- Icons, photos, GroundOverlay images and 3D presentation assets are not representable in a Shapefile.
- Folder trees are flattened when the target only supports layers.
- Mixed geometry may be split into separate target layers or files.
Supported conversions
Convert from KMZ
- Convert KMZ to Shapefile — Upload the compressed Google Earth package as it is and extract its vector data into Shapefile.
- Convert KMZ to KML — Open the XML-based map document inside a KMZ when a script, text editor or downstream tool requires plain KML.
- Convert KMZ to CSV — Turn the useful tabular part of a Google Earth KMZ into rows and columns without manually unpacking the archive.
- Convert KMZ to GeoJSON — Move compressed Google Earth vector data into a lightweight FeatureCollection suitable for browsers and APIs.
Convert to KMZ
- Convert Shapefile to KMZ — Package Shapefile features for Google Earth in one compressed file.
