Drawing Exchange Format (DXF)

DXF is Autodesk's documented interchange format for CAD drawings. It is the usual bridge from AutoCAD-compatible planning data into GIS; proprietary DWG is a different format and is not supported by GeoVerto.

Best used for
Importing survey, engineering, utility, architecture and planning drawings from CAD into a spatial workflow.
GeoVerto support
GeoVerto reads DXF as a source. It does not offer DXF as a target because ordinary GIS attributes have no safe, general mapping into that drawing format.

Coordinates without a CRS

A DXF contains drawing coordinates but does not reliably say whether they are WGS 84 degrees, UTM metres or a local engineering grid. GeoVerto therefore asks for the source CRS instead of guessing.

Layers instead of a GIS schema

Meaning in a CAD drawing often lives in layer names, colours and entity types rather than user-defined attribute columns. GeoVerto retains useful source properties such as layer and entity identifiers as attributes where the driver exposes them.

What may not survive GIS import

  • Line weights, colours and CAD styles are presentation, not portable GIS data.
  • Dimensions, hatches and block references may be expanded or omitted because they are drawing constructs rather than simple spatial features.
  • Text can become an attribute rather than a rendered map label.
  • Z coordinates can remain when source entities actually contain 3D coordinates.

Supported conversions

Convert from DXF

  • Convert DXF to Shapefile — Move an exchange drawing into a conventional GIS format for spatial analysis and delivery.
  • Convert DXF to GeoJSON — Prepare CAD drawing geometry for a browser map or JSON-based spatial pipeline.
  • Convert DXF to KML — Place CAD points, lines and compatible areas into their real-world position in Google Earth.
  • Convert DXF to GeoPackage — Use a modern single-file GIS container for CAD-derived data without Shapefile's sidecars and ten-character field limit.
