GeoPackage (GPKG)

GeoPackage is an open OGC standard built on SQLite. One portable file can hold multiple vector layers, their attributes and coordinate-system definitions; the specification can also store raster tiles.

Best used for
Modern desktop-GIS exchange, offline projects and datasets with several layers or richer attribute schemas.
GeoVerto support
GeoVerto reads and writes vector data in GeoPackage through the general converter and preserves separate source layers where the target format permits it.

A complete dataset in one file

The .gpkg file is self-contained. Unlike Shapefile, it does not need a bundle of sidecars and can keep several named layers together.

Coordinate systems and attributes

Each spatial layer records its CRS inside the database. Field names are not restricted to ten characters, Unicode works without a separate encoding file, and data types are richer than DBF.

Limits to know

  • It is broadly supported by current GIS software, but some older systems still insist on Shapefile.
  • A GeoPackage may contain many layers; a conversion still needs a deliberate layer selection when the target cannot hold them all.
  • The format is a data container, not a guarantee that application-specific styling will transfer.

Supported conversions

Convert from GeoPackage

Convert to GeoPackage

  • Convert Shapefile to GeoPackage — Replace a fragile sidecar bundle with a single database file that is easier to store, transfer and edit.
  • Convert GeoJSON to GeoPackage — Turn a web interchange file into a compact, indexed GIS database with explicit CRS metadata and typed columns.
  • Convert DXF to GeoPackage — Use a modern single-file GIS container for CAD-derived data without Shapefile's sidecars and ten-character field limit.
