Esri Shapefile (SHP)

A Shapefile is a long-established Esri vector format. Despite its name, it is not one file: geometry, index, attributes and usually coordinate-system information live in matching sidecar files.

Best used for
Exchanging points, lines or polygons with legacy GIS software, public authorities and workflows that explicitly require SHP.
GeoVerto support
GeoVerto reads and writes Shapefiles as ZIP archives so the required parts stay together. Mixed source geometry is separated into compatible outputs when necessary.

The files that belong together

A usable set needs files with the same base name. Upload them together as a ZIP rather than sending only the .shp file.

  • .shp stores geometry; .shx is its required index.
  • .dbf stores the attribute table and is also required.
  • .prj identifies the coordinate reference system; without it, the CRS cannot be established reliably.
  • .cpg declares the text encoding and helps non-ASCII characters survive between applications.

Limits that still matter

  • A layer holds one geometry type, so mixed points, lines and polygons need separate Shapefiles.
  • DBF field names are limited to ten characters and may be shortened on export.
  • There is no native date-time field; timestamps may become dates or text.
  • Unicode exchange is unreliable when the encoding sidecar is missing.

Coordinate systems

A Shapefile can use many coordinate systems, but the definition is normally carried by .prj. GeoVerto reports low CRS confidence instead of silently trusting a guess when that file is absent.

Supported conversions

Convert to Shapefile

  • Convert KML to Shapefile — Move Google Earth vector data into a format understood by desktop GIS.
  • Convert KMZ to Shapefile — Upload the compressed Google Earth package as it is and extract its vector data into Shapefile.
  • Convert GeoJSON to Shapefile — Create the classic four-part GIS format from a web-friendly GeoJSON file for legacy software, exchanges and established workflows.
  • Convert CSV to Shapefile — Build a traditional GIS dataset from survey exports, asset registers or other coordinate-bearing tables.
  • Convert GeoPackage to Shapefile — Export modern GeoPackage data into the older interchange format expected by many established GIS workflows.
  • Convert XLSX to Shapefile — Create a GIS-ready Shapefile from a coordinate workbook while keeping ordinary worksheet columns as attributes.
  • Convert DXF to Shapefile — Move an exchange drawing into a conventional GIS format for spatial analysis and delivery.
  • Convert DGN to Shapefile — Deliver MicroStation drawing elements in a GIS format accepted by older software and established exchange processes.
