GeoJSON
GeoJSON is an open, text-based JSON format for vector geometry and attributes. It is widely used by browser mapping libraries, spatial APIs and modern GIS tools.
- Best used for
- Web maps, APIs, version-controlled examples and small-to-medium datasets that should remain easy for people and software to inspect.
- GeoVerto support
- GeoVerto reads and writes GeoJSON in its general conversion workflows, including conversion to and from common desktop-GIS formats.
One self-contained text file
A .geojson file can contain points, lines, polygons and their attributes without sidecar files. A FeatureCollection is the usual top-level structure for a dataset.
Coordinate reference system
RFC 7946 defines GeoJSON coordinates in WGS 84 longitude/latitude. Older files sometimes contain a custom crs member; that member is no longer part of the current standard, although GeoVerto can still read legacy data that uses it.
Limits to know
- GeoJSON has no spatial index and large files are commonly loaded as a whole, making it a poor database substitute.
- Attribute values are limited to JSON types such as strings, numbers, booleans, arrays, objects and null.
- It carries geometry and data, not a portable map style.
Supported conversions
Convert from GeoJSON
- Convert GeoJSON to Shapefile — Create the classic four-part GIS format from a web-friendly GeoJSON file for legacy software, exchanges and established workflows.
- Convert GeoJSON to KML — Take features from a web map or API response and make them directly viewable in Google Earth.
- Convert GeoJSON to CSV — Flatten feature properties into a table that can be opened in Excel, LibreOffice or a data-analysis workflow.
- Convert GeoJSON to GeoPackage — Turn a web interchange file into a compact, indexed GIS database with explicit CRS metadata and typed columns.
Convert to GeoJSON
- Convert Shapefile to GeoJSON — Prepare a desktop-GIS Shapefile for browser maps, JavaScript libraries and JSON-based data pipelines.
- Convert KML to GeoJSON — Turn a Google Earth document into the native interchange format used by many browser maps and JavaScript GIS tools.
- Convert CSV to GeoJSON — Create a browser-ready FeatureCollection from a flat table while retaining the non-spatial columns as feature properties.
- Convert KMZ to GeoJSON — Move compressed Google Earth vector data into a lightweight FeatureCollection suitable for browsers and APIs.
- Convert GeoPackage to GeoJSON — Publish a layer from a desktop GIS database in the simple JSON format most web-mapping stacks understand.
- Convert GPX to GeoJSON — Publish saved GPS locations as a browser-friendly FeatureCollection without changing their coordinate system.
- Convert XLSX to GeoJSON — Turn spreadsheet rows into spatial features while retaining the useful columns as GeoJSON properties.
- Convert DXF to GeoJSON — Prepare CAD drawing geometry for a browser map or JSON-based spatial pipeline.
- Convert GML to GeoJSON — Turn verbose, schema-driven XML into the compact JSON feature format used by web maps and data APIs.
- Convert DGN to GeoJSON — Bring MicroStation elements into a web-map-ready FeatureCollection without pretending the drawing identifies its real-world CRS.
